Review: Half Moon Blue, Tobago West Indies

My love for boutique hotels is never ending. These are not your average large scale, and typically over-crowded, commercialized resorts. Boutique hotels are in fact smaller, and usually have more characteristic, charm and offer a more personalized service.

I stayed at the amazing Half Moon Blue Hotel in Tobago over a year ago and have decided to share my thoughts.

Location and Property: The hotel is located directly along the beautiful coastline of Bacolet Bay, which surrounds the island’s capital city of Scarborough.  It is approximately a forty (40) minute drive away from the Arthur Napoleon Raymond Robinson International Airport, located at Crown Point. The hotel shares the property of its sister hotel, the larger, more up-scale Bacolet Beach Club. Guests therefore interchangeably enjoy access to all pool and beach amenities of both hotels.

Décor and Design: The property was designed and established by Model Gloria Jones-Knapp. She has done a fantastic job of mixing worldly contemporary design with traditional Caribbean artwork and sculptures, to create an eclectic mix that still gives a cohesive feel.

Rooms and Amenities: I savored waking up to the sound of jungle birds and watching the sunrise across the bay from the comfort of our wide and spacious balcony, equipped with comfortable lounge furniture. The rooms feature a kitchenette, beautifully designed bathroom with double skins, bedrooms with comfortable bedding, flat screen TV with cable channels, couch, wardrobe and an amazing balcony with a priceless view.

Restaurant: Breakfast is served daily at the Café Havana, which is a separate building located on the same property. It serves a wide array of mouthwatering familiar international classics like bacon, pancakes, eggs and sausages; combined with savory local options like bake, sada roti, salt fish and smoked herrings. Breakfast was equally delicious on both mornings during my stay, which was predictable, as Café Havana is one of my favourite restaurants on the island.

Customer Service: The service at Half Moon Blue is impeccable. I booked directly via the Hotel’s website and had several e-mail correspondences with Ms. Britta at reservations. From the first point of contact to our last breakfast we continued to experience wonderful customer service. The staff at the restaurant were extremely friendly and polite, but not intrusive. We left the hotel each day with a pleasant feeling which lasted through out our daily escapades.

Overall Experience: Overall I would highly recommend this wonderful establishment to anyone looking to experience a true taste of Tobago hospitality. The authentic atmosphere, delicious food, comfortable amenities and private beach create the perfect blend for a happy vacation. It is not rampant with touristy gimmicks, but provides a true sense of Caribbean warmth in a stylish and modernized way, that still embraces this island’s remarkable history and uniqueness.
